How to See Deleted WhatsApp Messages (Android & iPhone, 2026)

Updated 18 September 2026 · Infinito Chat guides

When someone taps Delete for everyone, WhatsApp replaces the message with “This message was deleted.” WhatsApp itself has no undo for this, but the message already reached your phone, and there are a few ways to still read it. Here is what actually works in 2026, and what doesn't.

1. Android notification history (free, Android 11+)

Android can keep a log of every notification, including the WhatsApp preview of a message that was later deleted.

  1. Open Settings → Notifications → Notification history (on Samsung: Settings → Notifications → Advanced settings → Notification history).
  2. Turn it on.
  3. When a message is deleted, open Notification history and look under WhatsApp.

Limits: it only works if history was switched on before the message arrived, it only shows the short notification preview (long texts get cut off), it keeps about 24 hours, and it shows nothing for chats you had open or muted. Photos and videos are not saved.

2. Restore an older chat backup

If the message arrived before your last Google Drive or iCloud backup, reinstalling WhatsApp and restoring that backup can bring it back. This replaces your whole chat history with the backup, so anything newer than the backup is lost. It is a last resort, not something to do for one message.

3. Anti-Delete (Android and iPhone, texts + media)

Anti-Delete by Infinito Chat links to your WhatsApp the same way WhatsApp Web does (Linked devices). From then on it keeps a copy of every message that reaches you, so when someone deletes one, you still see the original: texts, photos, videos and status updates.

Limit: like every method, it can't recover messages deleted before you linked it.

What doesn't work

Quick answers

Will the sender know I read it? No. None of these methods send anything to the sender.

Can I see messages deleted a week ago? Only if a method was already running then (or a backup from before the deletion exists).

Never miss a deleted message again.
Anti-Delete saves deleted texts, photos, videos and statuses, on Android and iPhone. ₹299/month, cancel any time.
